UN Digest| Stage 1

As a series of touch points each day, UN leaders will share a thematic digest in short ‘explainer’ videos. UN leaders from across the UN System will share the vision for their organization’s efforts responding to the urgency to accelerate action to deliver the SDGs. These digests will illustrate their priorities, and to explain what is at stake, why you should care and how people everywhere can take action.

Winnie Byanyima
Executive Director, UNAIDS
Winnie Byanyima is the Executive Director of UNAIDS and an Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. A passionate and longstanding champion of social justice and gender equality. Ms Byanyima leads the United Nations’ efforts to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Ms Byanyima believes that health care is a human right and was an early champion of a People’s Vaccine against the coronavirus that is available and free of charge to everyone, everywhere.
Liu Zhenmin
Under-Secretary-General, UN DESA
Mr. Liu Zhenmin has been the UN Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs since 26 July 2017. He started his career at China’s Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1982, serving in various capacities, including as the Vice-Minister for Foreign Affairs of China since 2013 and as Permanent Representative to the UN Office at Geneva (2011-2013).

Mr. Liu has 30 years of experience in the diplomatic service, including 10 years working on climate change negotiations, including the conclusion of the Paris Agreement.

Today, Mr. Liu guides the UN Secretariat’s support to the 2030 Agenda follow-up and many other intergovernmental processes as well as UN DESA’s policy analysis and capacity development work.
