OPENING SESSION
This past year has driven a further wedge between the ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’ in the world – with weak social protections allowing many to fall through the cracks, and all while the debt infrastructure and tax havens uphold broken systems. With lives on the lines, we have tremendous opportunity and responsibility to act now. We must look forward to reimaging health systems, designing more inclusive economic systems, actively building a world that tackles the pervasive legacy of injustices, and one that curbs the yawning digital divide.
Setting the scene of Day 1 in the SDG Action Zone, this opening plenary will tell a nuanced story of poverty and inequalities – drawing on the perspectives of the highest levels of UN leadership, unapologetic activists, creative poets, and others. It will underscore why viewers should care about the issues at hand and highlight the most promising and transformative solutions for the 2030 Agenda that are within reach. There will be no room for tinkering around the edges.
